Bailey's Tweet

On p. 23 of Mary Hess' book Engaging Technology in Theological Education, she asks the following questions, "Does technology urge us to egnore our embodiedness?  Or can it make our relationality more tangible?  Does digital technology erase our humanity, or make our common bonds more visible?" (Hess, 23).

In the episode of Grey's Anatomy "Don't Deceive Me, Please Don't Go" Chief Weber experiences a paradigm shift in regards to social media.  Dr. Bailey is involved in a prestigious surgery and is being followed, via Twitter, by doctors and hospitals around the country.  While in the OR with Bailey, the Chief receives a tweet from an old colleague and Dr. Bailey receives a tip that possibly saves her patients life which causes the Chief to rethink his assumptions about social media.  I identify with the Chief and am oftentimes suspicious of new technology needing someone to introduce me to it's benefits before trying it out for myself.  I can choose to use social media in a positive way that strengthens human bonds and grows community, or in a way that isolate myself from the connections that nourish me.
